About Quidax
Quidax is where money meets limitless possibilities. We're making it super easy for individuals, businesses, and fintechs in Africa to access crypto. Our goal? Providing real value for our customers today while shaping the future of money.
About the Role
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Trading & Liquidity squad and build the systems that power the heart of Quidax.
This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys solving hard backend problems where reliability, performance, and correctness matter. You'll build and operate Java services that power trading, pricing, liquidity, order execution, settlement, and exchange integrations. These are systems where milliseconds matter, failures have financial impact, and every design decision counts.
You’ll thrive here if you’ve built transaction-heavy financial systems before, enjoy thinking deeply about distributed systems and concurrency, and love taking ownership of critical services from design through production.
What You’ll Be Owning
Build & Own Critical Trading Services
Design, build, deploy, and operate scalable Java services powering trading, pricing, execution, and liquidity.
Own critical backend services end to end, from architecture and implementation to production support and continuous improvement.
Build systems that remain reliable under heavy traffic, partial failures, and changing market conditions.
Trading, Execution & Liquidity
Develop and improve order management, execution, pricing, market data, and liquidity management capabilities.
Build and maintain integrations with exchanges, liquidity providers, custodians, payment providers, and other external platforms.
Improve execution quality through better pricing accuracy, spreads, fill rates, liquidity availability, and reduced slippage.
Build Reliable Financial Systems
Design reliable order lifecycles covering validation, routing, execution, settlement, reconciliation, cancellations, retries, and recovery.
Ensure financial correctness across balances, positions, fees, and settlements through precision, idempotency, consistency, and auditability.
Build distributed systems that behave correctly under concurrency, retries, duplicate events, and eventual consistency.
Improve Performance & Reliability
Continuously improve system performance, resilience, observability, throughput, and operational readiness.
Investigate production incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement preventive improvements.
Build testing strategies covering unit, integration, contract, performance, and resilience testing.
Raise the Engineering Bar
Participate in architecture and technical design decisions across the Trading & Liquidity squad.
Review code, mentor engineers, and help raise engineering standards across the team.
Collaborate closely with Product, Platform, QA, Security, Compliance, Risk, Finance, and Operations to deliver reliable financial systems.
Biggest Challenges You’ll Tackle
This isn't a role where you're simply building APIs.
You'll be solving engineering problems where correctness, speed, and resilience all matter at the same time.
Some of the challenges you'll tackle include:
Building systems that continue operating reliably during volatile market conditions.
Designing distributed systems that remain consistent despite failures, retries, and duplicate events.
Improving latency and execution quality without sacrificing correctness.
Managing concurrency, race conditions, transaction boundaries, and eventual consistency across critical financial systems.
Building exchange and liquidity-provider integrations that remain resilient when external systems fail.
Delivering systems where balances, settlements, and financial records remain accurate and fully auditable.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who enjoys owning complex backend systems and takes pride in building software that performs reliably in production.
Experience
5+ years of professional backend software engineering experience.
Strong commercial experience building Java backend systems.
Proven experience with Spring Boot and the wider Spring ecosystem.
Experience owning production systems from design through operation.
Experience building distributed systems, microservices, or event-driven architectures.
Experience working in trading, crypto, exchanges, capital markets, payments, or other transaction-heavy financial environments.
Experience mentoring engineers and improving engineering practices.
Technical Skills
You should have strong practical experience across most of the following areas:
Java: JVM fundamentals, memory management, collections, generics, concurrency and multithreading, streams, performance optimisation, exception handling, and functional programming.
Spring Ecosystem: Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Security, Spring Data JPA, dependency injection, transaction management, scheduling, validation, and configuration.
Databases: PostgreSQL or MySQL, SQL optimisation, indexing, transactions, isolation levels, data modelling, and connection pooling.
Distributed Systems: Microservices, event-driven architecture, asynchronous processing, Kafka or RabbitMQ, service communication, eventual consistency, distributed transactions, idempotency, retries, caching, and failure recovery.
Cloud & DevOps: Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP, monitoring, logging, tracing, observability, and production operations.
Security: Authentication, authorisation, API security, secure coding practices, secrets management, OAuth2, JWT, and OpenID Connect.
Trading & Liquidity Knowledge
You'll be comfortable working with concepts such as:
Order books and matching engines.
Market, limit, and stop orders.
Bid/ask pricing, spreads, liquidity, and slippage.
Order routing and execution.
Market data and pricing feeds.
Exchange and liquidity-provider integrations.
Settlement, reconciliation, balances, and positions.
Decimal precision and financial calculations.
Risk controls and abnormal market behaviour.
You'll Stand Out If You
Take ownership of systems rather than just writing code.
Enjoy solving production problems and improving reliability.
Can clearly explain technical decisions and trade-offs.
Raise the quality of engineering through mentoring and code reviews.
Stay calm when solving complex production incidents.
Care deeply about building systems that customers can trust.
Reporting Line
You'll report to the Engineering Manager for the Trading & Liquidity squad and work closely with Product, Platform, QA, Security, Compliance, Risk, Finance, and Operations to build reliable financial systems.
